So I'm late to the whole 30 days meme thing (since I don't read my flist on a regular basis - sorry), but I'm intrigued by this. So here goes.

Day 01 → Your favorite song

I could pick a favorite band, but I can't pick one song. Seriously. That's too damn hard.

In lieu of that I present a list of songs I could easily listen to over and over again for the rest of time.

The Beatles - "Don't Let Me Down"
Belle and Sebastian - "Women's Realm"
Camera Obscura - "Honey in the Sun"
The Clientele - "Bookshop Casanova"
The Decemberists - "The Legionnaire's Lament"
The Dresden Dolls - Boston (Live on March 2, 2004 - The "No, Virginia" version just doesn't compare...)
Sleater-Kinney - "Let's Call It Love / Nightlife"
Sonic Youth - "Massage the History"
Wintersleep - "Laser Beams"
The Wrens - "Everyone Choose Sides"
Cawdor Seeds, Brookline's first supernatural seed vendor!

*cough*

Dear Punchdrunk:

I love you. Don't leave me. I know our relationship hasn't always been great; when you first came to my attention back in October I regarded you with mild bemusement followed by utter scorn followed by excitement. And then I became a part of you, and got to see the inner workings of your magnificent work of art and how it touched people so deeply night after night. The work you have done is astounding on a creative and a technical level and now that my eyes are open to your new vision of the theatrical medium I can't go on without you.

Come February 7th you'll end the finest show I've ever seen or worked on, and vanish back to the UK. Hopefully the gift you gave us Bostonians will have a long lasting impact and we'll continue where you left off, but I'm not willing to leave such an important artistic movement to chance. If you have to go, please take me with you.

Love,
Jason

Cryptic bullshit aside, this just isn't fair. (Though the cryptic bullshit is perhaps keeping in line with what I've decided Punckdrunk ethos is; if art can't be achieved then just confuse the fuck out of people. These people confuse "signs directing patrons to the venue entrance" with "hey gang, let's solve this groovy mystery!". And I say that with the utmost of slobbering fanboi love.) Veering back on topic, the UK has better health care, mass transportation that isn't powered by concentrated fail, hott accents, great beer, my favorite bands, and now my favorite theatre company as well.

Why can't we have nice things?

Non cryptic re-dux of this post: I am a part of this. It is awesome.

I only found out about this yesterday, but Tharon Musser passed away on April 19th. For those unaware, Tharon was largely responsible for introducing the technical and artistic revolutions that modern lighting design relies on. Her design for the original Broadway production of A Chorus Line stands as the highlight of a long career during which she won 3 Tony awards and was nominated for 9 others. Her work lives on in just about every lighting designer out there (myself included), and through the efforts of the New York Public Library, who have Musser's paperwork for A Chorus Line in a new online database for theatrical lighting documents. She will be missed by many.

At some point I should get some icons, but I'm oh so very lazy.

Anyways, I recently finished designing lights for a production of The Shape of Things and figured I'd picspam some of my favorite lighting moments. (No, I won't get in trouble this time.) These were taken by Ryan, the scenic designer, and the white balance/aperture settings are a wee bit off, but they're not horrible. (I couldn't make it to photo call since I was busy writing cues for a production of The Pirates of Penzance I'm co-designing with a professor at school.)

Picspam ahoy! )
Many thanks to [personal profile] rho for fixing me up with an account.

So yeah. I'm Jason. I'm a theatrical lighting designer.

I have no free time.

I was/am "lonelysunday" over on that other journal site, and am also known in some circles as Red Tide. I change online identifiers once every 20 seconds because it's fun to confuse people, and because Washington Irving is a central part of Catch-22, my favorite book. (Get it?)

The end.

Boring first post is boring.
